Bright stacks of cut and whole melons, kept ready for customers, are drawing steady crowds throughout the day, especially during afternoon and evening hours when the heat is at its peak.Vendors say the demand for watermelon and muskmelon rose sharply in recent weeks, as residents prefer hydrating fruits that are easy to consume and widely available. Many customers are opting for freshly cut slices, while others are buying whole fruits to take home. The seasonal rush also encouraged more temporary sellers to set up small stalls, adding to the number of fruit points seen across the city.The melons being sold in Hubballi are sourced both locally and from outside the state. Traders and vendors report that supplies are arriving from within Karnataka as well as from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, depending on availability and market rates. The mix of local produce and imported stock helps vendors maintain supply during peak season, though it also affects pricing, as transportation and handling costs vary.This year, prices increased slightly compared to earlier weeks, with vendors attributing the rise mainly to higher transportation charges. Increased fuel costs and logistics expenses pushed up the overall cost of bringing the fruits to city markets and roadside points. Despite the marginal hike, sales remain strong, as watermelon and muskmelon continue to be among the most preferred summer fruits. Vendors expect demand to stay high as long as the heat persists, with steady arrivals planned to meet customer needs across Hubballi.Saleem Shaikh, a watermelon trader, said lower watermelon production led to high demand. He said farmers sold two different kinds of watermelon in the field for Rs 20 to 25 per kg and Rs 25 to 30 per kg. He said transportation charges increased to Rs 3 per kg from the previous Rs 1.5 per kg. He said the previous season saw a good yield because watermelon prices were lower. He added that muskmelon prices were also quite high.
