BELAGAVI: Girishothsava, a nine-day

theatre festival

held to celebrate Girish Karnad getting the Jnanpith award, is still fresh in the memories of theatre lovers in Belagavi. Girish Karnard Natakothsav Samiti and Kannada and culture department under the leadership of Shripati Manjanbailu, founder member and present honorary president of Rangasampada organised the event from October 24, 1999. Girishothsava was also held simultaneously in Bengaluru and Dharwad, but the

Manjanbailu said that it was the most successful and longest theatre festival ever held in Belagavi. Nine plays by Girish Karnard were performed by popular actors like Lokesh, Ramesh Arvind, Umashri, R Nagesh, CR Simha, Girija Lokesh, Enagi Balappa and others, he added.

Manjanbailu said theatre lovers from Kolhapur, Miraj, Sangli and Goa too witnessed the plays standing due to lack of seats in the auditorium.

On the last day of

Girishotsava

, November 1, Karnard interacted with writers and theatre lovers. He had stated that powerful plays don’t have borders. Karnad felicitated Manjanbailu for successfully organizing the festival.
