Karwar: Naveen Raj Singh, managing director, Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) held a meeting with the officials here on Thursday to discuss the construction of airstrip in the second phase of the expansion of Seabird naval base for the use of the civilians.
The officials visited the place where the airstrip is proposed to be built. A runway will be built for the naval planes in Karwar during the second phase of the naval base. The state government has already permitted to build the airstrip for civilians use. Naval officials and the officials of the district administration too participated in the meeting to discuss the issue.
Naveen Raj said that instead of building a full fledged airport in Karwar, thrust will be given to construct the airstrip first. "A large number of tourists come to neighbouring Goa in charter planes and a similar facility will be provided to the charter planes in Karwar. The government has received a green signal to use the runway built for the naval planes for civilians' use in Karwar. The private land and the forest land acquired by the navy to build the runway can be used for this purpose," he said.
Earlier, the officials also visited the Kanchinabailu and Alageri villages in Ankola taluk where the proposed runway will be built.
