MANGALORE: Intelligence alert about a dhow (boat) allegedly commandeered by three Pakistanis, planning a 26/11-type attack and headed for the Indian coast has kept the Coast Guard and Coastal Security Police in Karnataka on their toes.
The alert issued on December 23 was received by the police authorities here and concerted efforts are on to keep track of the boat and also thwart any attempts by the Pakistanis to infiltrate.
CM B S Yeddyurappa at a high level meeting of police officials in Bangalore spoke about the stepped up vigil across the state, in general and coastal Karnataka in particular. City police chief Seemanth Kumar Singh told TOI that city police has been on alert for the past 3 days, and is working in close quarters with the Coast Guard, Coastal Security Police and port authorities.
Observing that the intelligence is not city specific, but a general one for the west coast of India, Seemanth said the coastal security police is also taking the help of local fishermen and asking them to keep an eye out for any suspicious movement of fishing boats along the state's coast line. The Coast Guard on its part has stepped up patrolling on the high seas and the Coastal Security Police are taking care of coast related security issues.
Sources in the state police told TOI that the dhow in question was sold by a Jamnagar-based businessman to Khaled, a local fisherman from Mangalore. The boat, which is reported missing since, intelligence community believes is in the possession of three Pakistanis, who are said to be in possession of identity cards issued by local authorities to fishermen in India. "They are trying to infiltrate into India using these ID cards," sources said.
Incidentally, the Coastal Security Police and local police on December 24 had detained a boat `Al Jazeera' that arrived at the old port here on suspicion that its name matched the name of the boat mentioned in the intelligence input. The boat was found clean after a thorough search and even its crewmembers came clean. The boat ferries regular on the Mangalore-Lakshadweep route transporting essentials commodities to people there.
