Koppal / Sindhanur (Raichur): Union minister for heavy industries and steel HD Kumaraswamy Saturday urged the state govt to introduce a "sixth guarantee" for auto-rickshaw drivers, citing financial stress caused by rising fuel costs.
Speaking to reporters near the Munirabad toll gate in Koppal taluk, Kumaraswamy called on chief minister Siddaramaiah to consider the drivers' demand for a monthly assistance of Rs 15,000.
He criticised the state govt for levying taxes on fuel used by auto drivers and pressed for a rollback, saying support should be extended on the lines of the existing five guarantee schemes.
The minister said fuel prices were affected by global geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Gulf region, and that the situation is beyond India's control. He added that the Union govt has ensured steady oil supplies through timely interventions.
Kumaraswamy accused the state leadership of politicising the issue rather than addressing public concerns and cautioned against statements that could cause unnecessary confusion. He said the supply of essential commodities remains stable.
Several JD(S) and NDA leaders, including state core committee member CV Chandrashekhar and district president Suresh Bhumareddy, were present.
New Sainik School opened
A newly established Sainik School at Sri Krishnadevaraya Educational Institution in Sindhanur was inaugurated on Saturday by Kumaraswamy and minister of state for defence Sanjay Seth, in the presence of Andhra Pradesh minister Nara Lokesh. Several elected representatives and dignitaries attended.
Speaking on the occasion, Kumaraswamy said the Union govt is working extensively to strengthen India's defence sector, and the sanctioning of the Sainik School reflects this commitment. He credited the efforts of former minister Venkatarav Nadagouda for pursuing the demand.
