KU to hold 75th convocation tomorrow

Dharwad: Karnatak University (KU), Dharwad, will host its 75th annual convocation ceremony on Thursday at 11am at Gandhi Bhavan on KU campus. The candidates who have completed different graduate and post-graduate courses and PhDs in 2023-2024 academic year will be conferred degrees at the convocation.KU vice-chancellor Prof AM Khan said here on Tuesday that the convocation for 2023-2024 academic year could not be held as there was no regular vice-chancellor for the University.Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot will preside over the convocation. Former ISRO chairman Prof AS Kiran Kumar will deliver the convocation address, while higher education minister MC Sudhakar will be the chief guest.Providing details of the awards, the VC said that a total of 270 candidates will be conferred degrees and presented medals during the ceremony. Of them, 113 students will receive gold medals, 57 will be awarded prizes, 78 will receive scholarships, and 69 students will secure ranks.In the PhD category, 252 candidates will be conferred doctoral degrees. Among them, 172 are men and 80 are women. A total of 4,129 postgraduate students from various disciplines will be awarded degrees, while 24,030 undergraduate students will receive their degrees. Additionally, 69 students will be awarded PG diploma certificates.So far, the university has conferred honorary doctorates on 104 eminent personalities, he noted.Prof Khan said the varsity is facing shortage of funds and trying to enhance the augmentation of funds from internal sources. The varsity has to get Rs 136 crore and so far the govt has released Rs 67.5 crore, he said.On introducing AI in all subjects in under graduate and PG courses, the VC said the teachers are being trained in AI and once the training is completed AI will be introduced. It is proposed to earmark 15 hours in each year for three-year degree courses to teach AI.Registrar Shankar Vanikyal and evaluation registrar Prof. Nijalingappa Mattihal were present.
