Koppal observes complete bandh against steel plant
Koppal: In a show of solidarity, the entire Koppal community organised a complete shutdown to voice their opposition to pollution and the proposed addition of another factory that would further deteriorate the situation. The demonstration specifically targeted the planned BSPL steel plant by the Baldota Group, which is set to become the second-largest factory in the state, located just 8km from the district headquarters, amid ongoing pollution issues. Abhinava Gavisiddheshwara Swamiji of Gavi Mutt, a respected local religious personality, spearheaded a rally to raise awareness about the protest at the Mutt premises. Local poets organised a street poetry event to voice their opposition to the factory and pollution. The procession went through Jawaharlal Road to the Taluk Stadium, culminating in an open assembly.During the main event, Gavi Mutt Swamiji openly criticised the govt's inconsistent policies. He said, "The govt is akin to a mother. She should not harm her children. Yet, this harm was ongoing in Koppal for decades." Addressing MLA K Raghavendra Hitnal and MP K Rajashekar Hitnal, the seer said, "You three, including district charge minister Shivaraj Tangadagi, hold significant positions in the govt. Such a major project cannot proceed without your awareness. I am uncertain about your intentions, but you must come to Koppal with a directive to cancel this project."Swamiji emphasised the serious health consequences of pollution in Koppal, including contaminated air, deteriorating rural conditions, a rise in asthma and cancer cases, fertility challenges among youth, and birth defects. He said, "I cannot stay silent after witnessing this. My battle against pollution will persist." "No bandhs are anticipated in the near future. However, public protests against the factories that cause pollution will continue. This is a life-and-death matter for the community," he added. His straightforward comments were met with significant applause. Earlier, after viewing videos that showcased the difficulties caused by the factories, the seer was clearly moved. The city experienced a total transport shutdown, and legal professionals showed their support by boycotting court activities. Over 100 organisations endorsed the bandh, and political leaders across party lines took part. Religious and community leaders also participated in the demonstration. Prominent figures at both the procession and public meeting included MLA K Raghavendra Hitnal, MP K Rajashekar Hitnal, MLC Hemalatha Nayak, Gangavathi MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy, former MP Sanganna Karadi, BJP state executive member Dr Basavaraj Kyavatar, and former MLA and BJP Koppal district president Basavaraj Dhadesugur. After the gathering, the citizens' demands were presented to the chief minister via the deputy commissioner. Photos: 24-Koppal Bandh
