CHITRADURGA: The century-old government PU college in Chitradurga town is crying for attention as it is in a bad shape.

More than 2,000 students, including PUC and high-school boys and girls, are enrolled in this institution. There is no drinking water facility, althouh there is a bore well on the campus. It is not connected to a motor and hence, no water is supplied from it. The toilets are in ruin.

The college does not have a boundary wall and tresspassers are common. Several tresspassers gamble and drink alcohol on the campus and litter on the premises.

Weeds have grown everywhere on the campus and no one cleans them, Prof HKS Swamy, president of Karnataka Jnana Vignana Samithi (KJVS) in the district, said.

Rainwater along with sewage flows down into the college because of its natural gradient and the college ground turns into a water and sewage pond, Prof Swamy said. Live electric wires and cables are found sagging everywhere and they may fall at any time on anybody, he said.

Class 8 student Varadaraj, who was selected by the district children rights forum to meet the CM and express the grievances last month, said: "We are facing drinking water and wash rooms problems."

He added that the children were also not getting good quality food under the bisi oota (mid-day meal) scheme.

He said the government should provide cycles to the school students.

"We have met officials of the district legal service authorities (DLSA) in Chitradurga and brought these lapses to their knowledge," Prof Swamy said. The parents of some students also expressed displeasure about these lapses and said they wanted to meet the DC and ZP CEO of Chitradurga to bring these problems to their knowledge.
