HUBBALLI: In a landmark judgement, Chitradurga principal district and sessions court judge SB Vastramutt on Saturday disposed of a
murder case in just 11 days by sentencing a 75-year-old man to life imprisonment for killing his 63-year-old wife.
Parameshwara Swami, a resident of Valase village in Karnataka's Challakere, used to torture his wife suspecting infidelity.
On June 27, Swami got into a quarrel with his wife and, in a fit of rage, smashed her head and other body parts with a boulder. Following the incident, Puttamma’s elder brother Nagabhushan lodged a complaint at Taluku police station. The police arrested Swami and filed a chargesheet against him.
Judge Vastramutt remanded Swami in judicial custody and the trial was held from July 3 to 5. After hearing the prosecution and the defence, the judge delivered the judgement on Saturday. Besides sentencing the convict to life, the judge also imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000.
Swami's son Girish deposed against him in the court. The delivery of the judgement is being dubbed as the fastest in the country's judicial history.
