Jnanendra checks jail

Belagavi: Home minister Araga Jnanendra made an unannounced visit to the Hindalaga jail on Thursday after complaints regarding preferential treatment to heavyweight inmates, use of cellphones and narcotic drugs inside the jail. He inspected the food being served to inmates and cleanliness inside the jail. He spoke to some prisoners and asked them about the facilities provided in the jail. The minister addressed the complaints, saying that in such cases there is a punishment of five years of imprisonment for both, the facility user and providing officer. “We have suspended 15 officers from Parappana Agrahara jail and transferred 35 officers and a departmental inquiry is on,” he said. Minister BC Nagesh, Turuvekere MLA Masala Jayaram, MLC N Ravikumar were present.
