Gangavathi neglected in NH network, says industry body

Photo:Ashokswamy HerurKoppal: Expressing strong dissatisfaction over the continued neglect of Gangavathi in National Highway development, District Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Ashokaswamy Herur has urged both the Union and State govts to take immediate corrective measures.In a formal representation, Herur stated that Gangavathi, despite being one of the largest cities in Koppal district and a key commercial centre, still lacks direct National Highway connectivity.He pointed out that heavy vehicle movement between Sindhanur and Gangavathi along State Highway-23 has led to frequent accidents. The existing two-lane stretch, he said, is inadequate and must be upgraded to a four-lane road. He also urged that the route be recommended for elevation as a National Highway.Highlighting the region's economic landscape, Herur noted that mining units, cement industries, rice mills and paddy-based businesses rely heavily on road transport. Better highway connectivity, he said, would significantly enhance logistics efficiency and drive industrial growth.He further observed that while the Karwar–Ballari National Highway was halted at Hosalli in Koppal taluk, the proposed Jewargi-Ballari National Highway will pass through Sindhanur, bypassing Gangavathi. Similarly, the Kalmal-Ginigera highway has been extended only up to Sindhanur, leaving Gangavathi without direct National Highway links to Koppal, Kushtagi, Sindhanur or Ballari.Raising another concern, Ashokaswamy Herur alleged that numerous speed breakers have been installed on the Mudgal-Gangavathi toll road under State Highway-29, creating hurdles for motorists. As a result, many vehicles are diverting through longer alternative routes, causing inconvenience to residents of Kanakagiri and Tavaragera.The Chamber has appealed for coordinated govt action to ensure smooth movement of goods and passenger vehicles, reiterating that Gangavathi deserves NH connectivity in line with its economic significance.
