HUBLI: Dhanush Khot, an entrepreneur from Pune, had his misgivings when the idea of branching out his business to Hubli was floated. Starting from scratch in a new city seemed daunting. The Internet then came to his rescue.
"Some city-based websites helped me understand the city. I found out about some administrative offices and function halls in the city, which helped organize a conference in the city and subsequently open a branch here," explains Khot.

It wasn't plain luck that helped Khot figure out the dynamics of the business hub of the state. A host of city-centric websites and blogs have been providing information and services to help residents and visitors get the hang of all that's happening around them, be it news, events, entertainment, infrastructure, real estate, lifestyle, travel, movies and theatres, social and public utility services, business, education or hangout spots.
Sunil Nalawade of hublicity-egroup.blogspot.com says, "We started this blog to help citizens of the twin cities and visitors get easy access to all that they wanted to know about the city, besides setting up a platform to promote local businesses."
Manjunath Banashakari, co-founder of apnahubli.com, echoes him. "Our website is more informative and helps create social networks."
Deepali, a resident of Shimoga who visited the city as part of a north Karnataka tour with her family recently, says such websites helped her plan her itinerary. "I found out about the 'happening places', hotspots and hangouts. I could even find information about movies being screened in various theatres and multiplexes in the city."
