Dog show, adoption drive held in Dharwad

Dharwad: The grounds of Karnatak College in the city came alive with excitement, barks of joy, and wagging tails as hundreds of pet lovers gathered for a colourful district-level dog show and adoption drive on SundayOrganised jointly by the district administration along with zilla panchayat, Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, and the Karnataka Veterinary Association, the event was more than just a competition — it was a celebration of the deep emotional bond between humans and dogs.
Families, children, and animal lovers thronged the venue, many carrying their beloved pets dressed in colourful outfits for the pet fashion show. The police dog squad demonstration turned out to be a crowd favourite, with trained dogs showcasing discipline, intelligence, and agility, drawing loud applause from spectators.The highlight of the day was the dog show, which saw participation from 150 dogs representing 29 breeds. The competition was divided into four categories — small, medium, large, and Indian breeds. Judges carefully evaluated the dogs based on fitness, grooming, obedience, and overall personality.Amid cheers and camera flashes, a German shepherd owned by Sunil Poojari was crowned champion of the show, while other top honours went to dogs owned by Neelkanth Hadimani and Shailesh Hosamani. Several other pets received special recognition, making the event memorable for participants.But beyond trophies and titles, the most heartwarming moments unfolded at the adoption counter. Around 50 animal lovers registered to adopt stray dogs, and by the end of the event, 32 dogs found new homes. Many adopters described the experience as emotional and fulfilling, with some saying they had long wanted to give a street dog a second chance at life.Veterinary teams ensured that all adopted dogs were vaccinated against rabies and other infectious diseases. New pet parents were also given starter kits containing essential supplies. Officials announced that free sterilisation procedures would be provided within a year, ensuring responsible pet ownership.Awareness sessions on rabies prevention and animal care added an educational touch to the celebration. Organisers said the initiative aims to reduce stray dog population humanely, while promoting adoption culture.
