COOLER CARE FOR HAVERI POLICE CANINE UNIT DOGS
Haveri: After department officials observed that the service dogs were getting exhausted faster in the day, and were keeping unwell, Haveri district police has installed coolers in its canine unit, to help the service dogs cope with summer heat. Police officials said the dogs in the unit remained on duty 24/7 and needed to stay alert round the clock. But rising temperatures raised concerns about their health and the impact on operations.
The department installed coolers to keep the temperatures low, and help the K9 unit remain active and efficient. The unit includes two crime-detecting dogs, a female Doberman named Paaru and a female Belgian Malinois named Arya, along with two female Labradors, Sansa and Kaira.
The four dogs played a crucial role in investigations, including gathering clues in theft cases, conducting searches, and responding to special situations. Dogs don't regulate body temperature as effectively as humans, because they don't sweat in the same way., hence, the impact of heat is more noticeable on them. SP Yashodha Vantagodi said the dogs could be called for case detection at any time, and they need to be ready 24/7. Exhaustion made it difficult to carry out operations effectively. So, the coolers were installed considering the dogs' health and efficiency. “The setup was arranged through district police department’s funds,” she added.
