HAVERI: Once an yellow-throated sparrow transformed a little orphan boy Salim Ali into India's best ornithologist. Now, a student in Haveri is taking inspiration from the grand old man of Indian ornithology and is providing water to the birds through mini-artificial tanks in his garden. Sudarshan Patil, a resident of Manjunath Nagar who is studying in standard 6, thought of spending his summer holidays doing the birds good, by tying coconut shells and small plastic tubs to the branches of trees, filled with seeds and water frequently.
In the beginning, this oasis attracted only a few birds. So, he went on increasing the number of shells and plastic containers and increased the frequency of placing grain and water to three times per day. Now, sparrows, mynas, parakeets, bulbuls, crimson-breasted barbets are the daily visitors to his garden, and feed on the grains and drink water to quench their thirst.
"When we are thirsty, we will ask somebody to give water. Now, that the lakes and rivers are dry, these birds are benefited by my small service and I am really enjoying the flocking of birds to my small garden. I am happy to see around 37 birds visiting my bird sanctuary at any given time," Sudarshan said. What a novel idea! Everyone going through this road appreciate his concern for birds and are enjoying the scenic beauty.
