BCC collects Rs 18 crore property tax in 20 days

Belagavi: The Belagavi City Corporation (BMC) has recorded an encouraging start to its property tax collections for the current financial year, with Rs 18.12 crore collected between April 1 and April 20, aided by the 5% early-payment rebate.The robust collection within just 20 days has provided a significant boost to the corporation's revenue base at the start of the financial year. Until the end of April, officials expect the pace to pick up further, as collections traditionally surge in the final week of the month. The 5% rebate, applicable from April 1 to 30, has incentivised taxpayers to clear dues early. Civic officials noted a marked increase in digital payments this year, with more citizens opting to pay taxes through online modes such as net banking, UPI and the corporation's portal. Despite being engaged in key activities such as mapping for the voter list and census work, revenue staff have maintained steady recovery efforts. Meanwhile, discussions are underway on whether to extend the rebate period. Last year, the state govt extended the concession through May and June, offering relief to late taxpayers. Citizens are now hoping for a similar extension this year, which could further accelerate collections if approved.
