HUBBALI: The Karnataka Police has arrested Girish alias Vishwa, the prime suspect in the murder of a 20-year-old woman named Anjali at her residence in Hubbali.
Hubbali Commissioner of Police Renuka Sukumar confirmed the arrest, which took place on Thursday, a day after the stabbing incident.
Two police officials, Bendigeri Police station inspector Chandrappa Chickkodi and woman police constable Rekha Havreddi, have been suspended for dereliction of duty.
The victim had previously approached the Bendigeri police station to file a complaint against the accused, but instead of taking appropriate action, the police had sent her away.
The police initiated an investigation into the incident and took action against the accused based on a complaint filed by the victim's sisters. It was reported that Anjali had rejected Girish's marriage proposal, which allegedly led him to threaten her with the same fate as a 21-year-old Hubballi college student who was recently stabbed to death by her former classmate.
On Wednesday morning, Girish allegedly forced his way into Anjali's house, stabbed her multiple times, and fled the scene. The incident sparked outrage among the local community, leading to protests and demands for action against the accused.
Commissioner Renuka Sukumar stated that the two police officials were suspended for failing to act when the victim approached them with a complaint about the accused's threats, referencing the recent murder of Neha Hiremath, a 21-year-old college student in Hubballi. The victim's family sought legal action against the accused and assistance from the district administration.
In April, Neha Hiremath, a first-year MCA student at KLE Technological University in Hubballi Dharwad, was allegedly stabbed to death by her former classmate, Fayaz Khodunaik, on the university campus. Fayaz was swiftly arrested, produced before a magistrate, and remanded to 14-day judicial custody. The CID later took custody of Fayaz and brought him to Hubballi from Dharwad for further investigation.
