4 of a family die in roof collapse incident

Vijayapura: Four of the same family were killed when their house roof collapsed in Moratagi village in Almel taluk, Vijayapura district, on Thursday night, after heavy rains.

The deceased were identified as Gurunath Badiger, 35, his wife Jyoti Badiger, 28, their daughters Kalamma Badiger, 13, and Keerti Badiger, 9. Gurunath’s mother Shantabai said that he was her elder son, looking after all family affairs. “Since we were renovating our ancestral house, they were living in a rented house. We neither have any agricultural land nor any other property. Gurunath was working as a carpenter and a daily wage labourer. His son Veeresh, 10, was sleeping with us in another house and he is survived,” she added.

District minister MB Patil, Sindagi MLA Ashok Managuli and other elected representatives visited the village and consoled the Badiger family members. He announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for each deceased. “A total of Rs 20 lakh will be provided as a fixed deposit in the name of the surviving boy Veeresh Badiger. We will also extend some personal compensation to the family,” he added.

Vijayapura DC Anand K, ZP CEO Rishi Anand, SP Laxman Nimbargi and other officials visited the spot and monitored the relief operation taken up by fire and emergency services personnel.
