DHARWAD: The JSS College of Dharwad will host a three-day state level wrestling competition for the Pre-University and Vocational Courses colleges from Saturday. The competitors will report on Saturday and the events will commence from Sunday.
Principal of JSS College Ajith Prasad and deputy director of PU department Raveendra Ritti told reporters here on Thursday that 300 boys and 100 girls will vie for top honours in 10 and eight weight categories, respectively.
Those who have won at the district level competitions will be eligible to participate in the state level event. The winners at the state level will participate in the national level competitions to be held at Delhi from December 23.
This is the third time the state level wrestling competitions for PU College students are being held. Raveendra Ritti said sports persons including wrestlers from Dharwad district PU Colleges had shone at the state and national levels and had won several medals.
Sachin Padatare, Sandeep Katwe, Shankar Magadum, Basappa Mamadapur, Anil Ghorpade, Swati Patil and Asma Jamadar among others who have won medals at the national level will exhibit their skills.
HDMC commissioner P S Vastrad will inaugurate the meet on Sunday at 9.30 am. International wrestler M R Patil will be the chief guest. Prof N Vajra Kumar will preside over the event.
Also, renowned wrestler, Vinayak Dalwi, who won the gold medal at the Asian Games, DDPU Raveendra Ritti and commissioner of public instruction Venkatesh Machakanur will be the chief guests for the concluding function to be held on Monday at 5 pm. Principl Ajith Prasad will preside.
