Zubeen's legacy takes root in ‘bakul’ saplings
Guwahati: It’s a pain people across the state felt, but were unable to express in words. To keep alive the memory of their hero, who advocated for protecting nature throughout his life, his fans across the state, as well as outside, planted trees, mostly ‘Bakul’.
Senior actor from the Assamese film industry, Rajib Kro, planted a Bakul tree at his residence in Diphu, Karbi Anglong, in Zubeen’s memory. “A tree is named after Zubeen. He cared about the well-being of the people and did good deeds for them. This Bakul tree, planted in Zubeen’s memory, will one day grow large and provide oxygen to people,” he told TOI.
He added that Zubeen was a great nature lover and always raised his voice for the plantation and protection of plants. “This should be followed by Zubeen fans to keep his memory alive and show respect to the legend,” he added.
Meanwhile, Assam forest service officer Chayankia Barman from Nagaon, who is currently under training at the Telangana Forest Academy, said in a post on social media that they planted a Bakul tree on their hostel premises as a tribute to the cultural icon. “Though we are miles away in Telangana, the loss feels deeply personal, as if a part of our own heart has gone silent. Zubeen da was more than a musician. He was the voice and the heartbeat of Assam. His songs have been the soundtrack of our lives, carrying our joys and sorrows with equal grace,” she added.
Chayanika said they played Zubeen’s legendary ballad ‘Mayabini’ while planting the sapling, honouring his wish. “The sweet fragrance of the Bakul will now stand as a living symbol of his eternal presence, blooming with the same magic his music brought into our lives. Though miles apart, we will keep him alive within us, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire generations to come. The voice of our generation has gone from sight but never from our hearts,” she added.
Similarly, Nishan Gogoi of Athkhelia in Golaghat district planted a mango tree on his residence premises in memory of Zubeen, of whom he is a die-hard fan like lakhs of others.
