Zubeen’s drummer & co-singer sent to Haflong jail for 14 days
Guwahati: Zubeen Garg’s drummer and co-singer have been sent to 14-day judicial custody by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro) district on Friday, after the end of their police remand.
The duo was taken to the sub-jail at Haflong in Assam’s hilly district of Dima Hasao instead of the Guwahati Central Jail due to security concerns. They were arrested on Oct 2, a day after the organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore Shyamkanu Mahanta and the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma were arrested in connection with the case. All of them were on the yacht at the time of Zubeen’s death, allegedly while swimming in the sea in Singapore.
Shekhar and Amritprabha were taken to the jail in Haflong amid tight security cover. “No bail petition has been moved so far by the accused till Friday evening. No advocate has come forward to represent them before the court following the All Assam Lawyers’ Association’s decision not to represent the accused,” an advocate said at court.
The other five accused, including Shyamkanu and Siddharth, were sent by the court to judicial custody on Wednesday and transported to the district jail in Baksa instead of the Guwahati Central Jail for security reasons. However, the situation turned violent when thousands of people gathered outside the jail premises clashed with the police, resulting in injuries to several persons, including police personnel and journalists. Police resorted to lathi charge and used tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
Police arrested two more individuals and identified eight others for their role in the violence, raising the total to four and 15, respectively.
On the other hand, the mobile internet data services were restored in Baksa district on Friday, after remaining suspended for two days. The services were suspended with immediate effect on Wednesday over apprehension of social media and internet being used to spread provocative messages or rumours, which may lead to further aggravation of the situation.
However, voice call services and broadband connectivity based on fixed telephone lines remained functional during this period.
