Zubeen Garg death probe: Judicial custody of 5 accused extended by 14 days; 7 arrested so far
NEW DELHI: A local court in Guwahati on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of five accused persons in the Zubeen Garg death case by 14 days, following their virtual appearance before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup Metropolitan.
The five accused are North East India Festival chief organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, singer's manager Siddhartha Sharma, his cousin and police officer Sandipan Garg, and personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya.
"The current judicial custody of the five accused will end tomorrow. They were produced before the CJM through virtual mode, and the custody was extended by 14 days," an official said.
The accused are currently lodged in Baksa jail, where they were transferred on October 16 after their police remand ended. Their transfer sparked violent protests outside the prison, resulting in injuries to police and media personnel.
Zubeen Garg died while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19, during his visit to attend the 4th North East India Festival.
Two other accused persons, Garg's band members Amritprava Mahanta and Sekharjyoti Goswami, are being held under judicial custody in Haflong prison, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to seven.
A 10-member Special Investigation Team of the state police's CID, led by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, is investigating the case. Gupta, along with another officer, recently visited Singapore as part of the investigation.
