3,500 pages, 300 witnesses: Assam SIT submits charge sheet in Zubeen Garg death probe; CM says justice will be delivered
GUWAHATI: Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday filed a 3,500 page charge sheet in a Guwahati court in connection with the death of celebrated singer Zubeen Garg, who died under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19. He had travelled to the island nation to participate in the 4th North East India Festival (NEIF).
During its probe, the SIT examined around 300 witnesses in connection with the case.
Urging people to trust the judicial process, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had on Thursday said he was confident that justice would be delivered. The SIT, operating under the CID, was constituted after more than 60 FIRs were lodged across the state demanding a thorough investigation.
Zubeen Garg, born on November 18, 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya, hailed from an Assamese family deeply rooted in his ancestral village, Tamulichiga in Jhanji, Jorhat. Despite a career that took him across India and abroad, the singer remained emotionally connected to the culture, people, and vibrant ethos of Assam and the Northeast.
As part of the probe, an SIT delegation led by Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta met Singapore authorities on October 21. So far, the team has recorded statements from more than 300 individuals.
The SIT has arrested seven people during the investigation — main event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin Sandipan Garg, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, co-singer Amritprava Mahanta, and his PSOs Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya. All of them are currently in judicial custody.
Meanwhile, Congress MP and deputy leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar seeking a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death in Singapore.
