Asking his companions to wait outside, Das went to meet outpost in-charge Mohan Shyam Sinha. As he was discussing the incident with Sinha, the sentry on duty, constable Thaneswar Phukan, suddenly barged into the room and angrily questioned Das why he was spoiling their Bihu celebrations. Phukan, who was allegedly drunk, then suddenly fired at Das with his service rifle. "The victim was hit in the chest by a single bullet of .303 rifle. He was immediately taken to Tinsukia Civil Hospital where he was declared dead. We have arrested the accused constable, while the outpost in-charge has been suspended," said ASP Dungel.
