Guwahati: A day after the Ulfa (I) executed two of its new recruits for “spying” for the Army and Assam Police, director general of police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Sunday said there are no reasons for them to send spies to the banned outfit at this time when efforts are being made to create an environment for peace talks between the government and the outfit.

He said, “The state government has shown goodwill for peace talks and we have seen that Ulfa-I chief Paresh Baruah has also responded to that. Why would Assam Police send a spy at this moment? It is time for creating an environment for peace talks between the government and the outfit... Why would Assam Police try to hinder the efforts?”
He questioned if anyone has heard that Assam Police have ever sent or used spies in its glorious history. “Assam Police have launched different operations at different times and also achieved success. But it has never done any act of sending a spy in its history,” he added.
Ulfa-I on Saturday said it had executed two new recruits — Dhanjit Das of Barpeta and Sanjib Sarma of Baihata Chariali — after a “court” of the outfit “found them guilty” of spying for the Army and Assam Police and attempting to convince other cadres to surrender.
He said many people have lost lives in the three-decade movement of the Ulfa-I. “We want a peaceful state where people can live with dignity. Brave people do not kill someone over internal matters/issues and blame others for that. Assam Police have no link with the incident. It was related to their internal matters,” he added. He urged the Ulfa-I to come forward and respond to the appeal of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma for building a peaceful state.
Meanwhile, the CM said, “Court pronounces death penalty after hearing all the parties. In simple language, they (Ulfa-I) took away some youths for joining the outfit and they killed them there. There cannot be development in Assam with bloodshed. Therefore, I have been requesting the outfit repeatedly so that we can come to the peace talk table. I would urge those youths who have joined Ulfa-I for different reasons to learn a lesson from this incident.”
