Silchar: Sribhumi police on Saturday evening arrested two youths and seized a country-made pistol and Rs 48,000 in fake currency notes from their possession during a raid at Ratabari in Karimganj district.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Subimal Nath, in-charge of Nivia police outpost under Ratabari police station, launched an operation in the Jalalabad area and intercepted a motorcycle. On searching the vehicle, police recovered one 7.65 mm pistol with a live round and 98 RS 500 counterfeit notes hidden under the seat.
The arrested persons have been identified as Abidur Rahman (28) and Anowar Hossain (29), both residents of Taltola village under Nilambazar police station. The motorcycle was also seized.
Police said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS and the Arms Act, and an investigation is ongoing to identify the network behind the fake currency and the illegal firearm.
Officials said the arrests mark a significant breakthrough in curbing the circulation of counterfeit notes and the flow of small arms in the region.
