Silchar: Two minor siblings drowned in a pond at Paschim Jurbari village under Patharkandi police station in Sribhumi district of Assam on Friday.
The victims have been identified as Momota Begum (5) and her younger brother Sajjan Ahmed (3), children of Sabbir Ahmed and Jahangira Begum, residents of Paschim Jurbari.
Police said the incident occurred around noon when the children had accompanied their mother to a neighbour’s house. While she was engaged in conversation inside, the siblings wandered off and fell into a nearby pond.
A frantic search ensued after the children were reported missing. Sajjan’s body was the first to be spotted floating in the pond, followed shortly by the recovery of Momota’s. Both were rushed to the Patharkandi govt hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.
Patharkandi police, led by officer-in-charge Someshwar Roy, arrived at the scene promptly and initiated legal formalities. The bodies were later sent to Karimganj civil hospital for autopsy in the presence of circle officer Aditi Nunisa.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the village, leaving the community in mourning.
