Silchar: Police seized a large consignment of Yaba tablets worth around Rs 1 crore and arrested two alleged drug peddlers in Assam’s Sribhumi district, officials said on Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Badarpur police station carried out a late-night raid near Badarpur railway station on Sunday. After keeping vigil for several hours, the team detained two suspects and recovered nearly 10,000 Yaba tablets from them.
The accused were identified as Ahmed Hossain Laskar from Patharkandi and Abu Hossain of Batia area in Sribhumi district.
According to police, the duo had arrived in Badarpur by train and were allegedly planning to supply the contraband in different parts of the region. Investigators suspect that the accused are part of a larger inter-district drug trafficking network. Efforts are on to identify other members of the racket and trace the source of the consignment.
The operation was led by officer-in-charge of Badarpur police station, Tarang Patowary, along with Malua outpost in-charge Shubham Kumar Paul and other personnel.
Police termed the seizure a success in the ongoing drive against drug trafficking in the district.
