Silchar: A truck driver and his helper from Assam’s Dholai area lost their lives in a road accident on NH-6, connecting Aizawl with Lunglei in
Mizoram, after their vehicle plunged into a deep gorge near Mualthuam.
The bodies were recovered on Sunday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Ashique Uddin Laskar (35), the owner and driver of the vehicle, and Sabir Ahmed Majumder (21), the helper — both residents of Hawaithang under Dholai police station in Assam’s Cachar district.
According to reports, the duo left Sribhumi last Wednesday in a truck loaded with biscuits and other food items, bound for Lunglei in Mizoram. However, about 40 km from their destination, the vehicle reportedly lost control and fell into a deep gorge near Mualthuam on Saturday night.
A third person from the same village, who was travelling with them, sustained minor injuries and managed to climb out of the gorge. He later informed Ashique’s family over the phone about the accident.
Mualthuam residents rushed to the spot after learning of the mishap. Around 9 am on Sunday, they managed to retrieve the bodies of Ashique and Sabir from the gorge.
Police from Lunglei soon arrived at the scene and carried out the necessary formalities before sending the bodies to Lunglei Civil Hospital for autopsy.
Family members of the deceased have already left for Lunglei to bring back the bodies. Ashique is survived by his wife and four young children.
