AGARTALA: Tripura gymnast Deepa Karmakar's success in the Commonwealth Games on Thursday is being celebrated across the state. Deepa, who hails from Abhoynagar in Agartala, is the first woman and second Indian to clinch a Commonwealth Games medal in artistic gymnastics. She won a bronze.
Tripura sports minister Sahid Chowdhury congratulated Deepa. "Her remarkable achievement makes us proud as citizens of Tripura," said Chowdhury. Leader of opposition Sudip Roy Barman and former minister and convener of Trinamool Congress Ratan Chakraborty demanded appropriate honour for Deepa who made history by winning a bronze in the Commonwealth Games.
Deepa won the Commonwealth bronze with an average score of 14.366. The 20-year-old scored a mere 13.633 points in the first vault, the lowest of eight competitors in the final. However, on Thursday night, she scored the highest in the second vault with 15.100 to increase her average to 14.366.
