Dibrugarh: In a move to strengthen the fight against substance abuse and illegal trafficking, a high-level meeting of the district level committee under the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) mechanism was held at the district commissioner’s office in Tinsukia on Thursday.
The meeting, presided over by Tinsukia district commissioner Sumit Sattawan, saw the participation of key officials including Tinsukia SSP Mayank Kumar, Sadiya SSP Anchal Chauhan, and additional district commissioners Pankaj Kumar Nagbanshi and Mandira Baruah. Representatives from the education, health, and social welfare departments were also present.
The primary agenda focused on formulating stringent strategies to curb the illegal trade and transport of drugs, alcohol, and other psychotropic substances within the district. Recognising Tinsukia’s geographical vulnerability, the DC emphasised the need for a multi-departmental “zero-tolerance” approach.
Tinsukia shares a porous border with Arunachal Pradesh, which in turn borders Myanmar — placing the district on a direct transit route from the infamous Golden Triangle, one of the world’s most prolific opium-producing regions. This strategic location makes Tinsukia a high-risk corridor for the movement of synthetic drugs and narcotics.
The discussion also reviewed the functioning of govt and private de-addiction centres. The DC issued strict directives for regular inspections to ensure compliance with medical and ethical standards, stressing that rehabilitation must be handled with care and professionalism.
“Our goal is not just to arrest the supply, but to heal those caught in the cycle of addiction. We must ensure that every de-addiction centre in Tinsukia provides quality care and follows standard operating procedures. Regular monitoring is non-negotiable,” said the DC.
Under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Addiction-Free India Campaign), the meeting highlighted the importance of grassroots awareness. The DC urged officials to intensify educational programmes in schools and colleges to protect youth from narcotics and promote awareness across public spaces in the district.
Law enforcement agencies were directed to heighten surveillance on known smuggling routes and maintain a sharp vigil.
