ITANAGAR:
Road connectivity between Tezu
and Namsai
in Lohit
district of Arunachal
Pradesh was disrupted following rise in the water level of the Kamlang
river. Several heavy vehicles, bound for Tezu
, Hayuliang
and Tinsukia
in Assam, were stranded on NH-52 at Kamlang
in Wakro
circle of the district because of floodwaters. Sources on Saturday said the river's flooding was also posing threat to an army camp, local and government residences.
The water resource department (WRD) is keeping a close eye on the situation and is trying to find an immediate solution.
"The river's flooding has affected traffic. We are trying to find an alternative to diverting the river. Turbulent water current has made it tough to divert the river from the original course. Still chained excavators have been hired and the Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) has been asked to assist the department to mitigate the deteriorating situation," said assistant engineer, WRD, Gonong Pertin.
Residents alleged that rampant quarrying was responsible for the river changing course.
The department is now hard pressed to bring the fast-deteriorating situation under control. Local MLA and parliamentary secretary for environment & forests Chow Tewa Mein has assured the local residents that steps would be taken to check flooding of the Kamlang river.
R K Pandey, BRTF commanding officer posted at Jentu in Namsai, said the force was unable to pitch in at present as all their machinery has been engaged in Anjaw district.
