Tezpur University professor Satya Sundar Bhattacharya elected Indian National Science Academy fellow

Professor Satya Sundar Bhattacharya of Tezpur University has been elected as a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), a top honor in Indian science. Recognized for his groundbreaking work in soil health, waste recycling, and sustainable agriculture, Bhattacharya's fellowship begins in January 2026.

Guwahati: Professor Satya Sundar Bhattacharya from the department of environmental Science at Tezpur University was elected as a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).This is one of the highest honours in Indian science, recognising his pioneering work in areas like soil health, waste recycling, nano-fertiliser development, earthworm biology, and sustainable agriculture.INSA is considered the apex academy of science in India, and this fellowship for Prof. Bhattacharya will start in Jan 2026. This year, there are only two fellows from the northeast who were elected for this prestigious achievement in the field of scientific and research contribution.Bhattacharya heads the soil and agro-bioengineering laboratory, which works on plant medicinal compounds in changing environmental conditions, solid waste valorisation, vermicomposting, soil restoration, and nano-enabled solutions for agriculture.According to a statement from Tezpur University, “Prof. Bhattacharya’s selection places him among a distinguished group of researchers who have made transformative impacts across disciplines.
His research work resulted in over 100 publications, including 89 in well-known and reputed journals, and he holds an Indian patent for a new soil conditioner (2020), which was adopted for industrial use. His work is widely referenced, with a Google Scholar h-index of 38.Prof. Bhattacharya's contributions were recognised both nationally and internationally. He received the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award in 2018, was elected as a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc) in 2024, and served as a Research Professor at Hanyang University in Seoul. He also collaborates with Orebro University in Sweden, enhancing international research partnerships.The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, congratulated Prof. Bhattacharya on his selection and wished him continued success.
