Tezpur students explore hidden gems of the past

Dhubri: As many as 30 students took part in a heritage conservation event organised by the Indian Red Cross Society in Tezpur.

Tezpur Red Cross Society recently organised a workshop to educate these students about the heritage sites of the town.


The students hit the roads with a tour guide and walked from places to places and discovered hidden stories about sites which were little known to them.

The walk leader explained the stories beyond recorded history that are deeply rooted in popular beliefs. He narrated tales of King Banasura, the extraordinary love story of Usha, Aniruddha and Chitralekha and imprisonment of Aniruddha.

“The Tezpur town was given its mordern shape by the British and their administrative system, which brought profound socio-economic changes. In 1835, the district headquarter was shifted from Mangaldoi to Tezpur when the area was full of wilderness”, the walk leader said.

Talking to TOI, secretary of Assam State Branch Indian Red Cross Society, Deba Prasad Sarma, said the students visited Chitralekha Udyan, Tezpur Circuit House, Asomiya Club, Jonaki Hall, Borgola, Poki, Kamrupiya Namghar, Bengali Theatre and the District Museum as part of the tour.
