SILCHAR: A college teacher was caught red-handed by an invigilator at GC College in Silchar on Saturday for appearing as a proxy candidate in the Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET).
District elementary education officer and mission co-ordinator (Cachar) M K Nath said Mansur Alam Barbhuiya, a teacher of Madhab Chandra Das Collage, Sonai in Cachar district, was caught red-handed for appearing in the exam on behalf of a candidate named Saleh Ahmed Barbhuiya, a resident of Sonai.
The candidate in question is the brother of the detained man who teaches Bengali in the said college.
Mansur Alam was handed over to Silchar Police by TET centre authorities for further action, said Nath.
OC (Silchar police station) S C Sharma said police have detained the man and he is now under the custody of Silchar police station.
Elsewhere, TET was held peacefully amid tight security measures. There's no report of any untoward incident from Hailakandi and Karimganj.
Altogether 15,000 candidates appeared for TET in Cachar district. The number is 4900 and 5677 in Hailakandi and Karimganj districts respectively. The number of centres in Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj is 46, 22 and 19 respectively.
The vacant posts of assistant teachers for MIL subjects, including Bengali, Manipuri, Nepali and Hmar in primary schools across Barak Valley districts is nearly 4000, against which the selected candidates will be appointed, said an official of the department of elementary education.
