Silchar: A 52-year-old man was hacked to death and two others were injured in an attack by a group of suspected buffalo smugglers near the India-Bangladesh border in Assam’s Cachar district on Friday night. The incident triggered tension in the area.The incident took place at Jalalpur along the international border when the group allegedly attacked a local resident, Ashikul Islam, with sharp weapons after he tried to stop them from taking buffaloes across the border into Bangladesh.According to police sources, Islam confronted the group late at night after noticing the movement of several buffaloes towards the border. In retaliation, the smugglers allegedly assaulted him with machete-like weapons, leading to his death. Hearing the commotion, Islam’s brother and nephew rushed to his aid but were also attacked, leaving both critically injured.Police rushed to the spot upon receiving information, recovered the body and sent the injured to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment.Family members of the deceased have alleged the involvement of several locals in the attack. The attackers fled, abandoning the animals. Police said a few buffaloes have been recovered and an investigation is underway. There has been no report of arrest so far.
