GUWAHATI: Two rank holders in civil services examinations interacted with students of Cotton College on Sunday as part of its 112th foundation day celebrations. They observed that the northeast lacks proper guidance facilities and study material for students aspiring to pursue their career in civil services. Mukesh Pandey and Dimpy Borah, former students of Cotton College, also spoke about their academic pursuits and how they went about preparing for their examinations.

Pandey secured 14th position in UPSC examinations while Dimpy Borah cracked the Indian Forest Services achieving 10th position.
The two said that students from the northeast tend to look the civil services examinations in a negative way and that is the reason for the dearth of students from the region pursuing IAS, IFS and other civil courses. "Students from the northeast generally believe that these examinations are very tough and almost impossible to crack. This mindset shows lack of awareness about the civil courses and because of this gap there is no motivation to inspire students and make them realise their potential in the long run. Another adverse factor is the lack of study material and guidance," said Pandey, who will be leaving for his IAS training session in August.
He also said that there should be some initiative from NGO's and lauded the role of the state government in helping prospective candidates.
Dimpy Borah said: "Students should groom their personality and at times interact with students in English. They must be well-versed in current affairs." The two also urged the students to cultivate a habit of reading newspapers and focus on their goal. "The focus should be based on interests, and the specific field of interests play an important role in achieving the desired results. One should also work on the deficiencies so that the weak spots could be worked on," added Borah.
