Silchar: In a major anti-drug crackdown, Sribhumi police arrested two alleged peddlers and seized 131 grams of heroin valued at around Rs 50 lakh from Badarpur Station Road on Monday night.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from Badarpur police station intercepted the duo during a naka check and recovered the contraband, which was concealed inside 11 soap cases to evade detection.
Police said a field test using a narcotics detection kit confirmed the substance to be heroin, following which the accused were taken into custody under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. The arrested persons have been identified as Abul Hussain Choudhury and Kajal Ahmed, both residents under the jurisdiction of Sribhumi police station.
According to investigators, the consignment was allegedly being transported to Guwahati by train when the operation was carried out.
“Preliminary investigation suggests the involvement of a larger network. Efforts are on to trace other links in the supply chain,” a police officer said.
Necessary legal procedures have been initiated, and further investigation is underway, police added.
