Six rescued from island on Siang river

Itanagar: Police on Wednesday rescued six persons, who were stranded on an island on the Siang, in Arunachal Pradesh's East Siang district.On Tuesday, the group had gone to collect ‘stink bug' from the island, using a country boat, but failed to return due to inclement weather, deputy superintendent of police (HQs) Ayup Boko said. Around 8.30 pm, Mebo police station received information that six people were stranded on the Siang River, he said.A rescue team, led by Mebo police station officer-in-charge Akai Chama, along with SDRF sub-inspector in-charge A Barua, was immediately dispatched. The team reached the site around 10.30 pm, but had to postpone their rescue operation due to darkness and heavy rain.On Wednesday, they managed to rescued the stranded individuals, who have been identified as Opang Tamuk (41), Punchung Rai (19), Rajen Narzari (19), Sompa Marpeche (19), Santosh Chetry (21) and Vijay Tamang (17), the official said.Meanwhile, East Siang superintendent of police Pankaj Lamba has lauded the police and SDRF team for their prompt action.
