Silchar rally today to demand use of Bengali in govt offices

SILCHAR: The Language Act Protection Committee will organise a rally in Silchar on the occasion of World Mother Language Day on Monday, to demand the use of Bengali language in all government offices in Barak Valley as per the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Act, 1961.


The rally, planned after the committee held a meeting in Silchar, will start from Rangirkhari point at 4 pm on Monday and culminate near Gandhi Baag, Park Road.

Committee president and former vice-chancellor of Assam University Tapodhir Bhattacharjee told the media that 14 people had sacrificed their lives in 1961, 1972, and 1986 when conspiracies were hatched to make Assamese the official language of Assam, including Barak valley. The nefarious attempt to establish cultural dominance in the state was foiled because of the sacrifices of the brave souls, he said. Vice-president of the committee Kishore Bhattacharjee claimed that attempts are being made to obliterate the existence of Bengali language. The Assamese language is used in all government advertisements in Barak valley, violating the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Act, 1961. The government, however, is silent on the matter, he added.

Committee general secretary Sanjeev Roy said a huge number of people from various communities will take part in the rally on Monday to send a message that attempts to establish cultural dominance would not be tolerated.
