Cong neglected indigenous community: Scindia

Agartala: Union minister of development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday accused Congress of neglecting the indigenous community and stifling their voices during a state-level celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas here.
He stated that post-Independence, the indigenous society faced development challenges and welfare issues. During the Congress administration, indigenous peoples' voices were silenced, and they were denied basic rights.
He said a significant transformation occurred in 2014 when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister. "Congress, which only used to talk about themselves, tried to erase the history of Bhagwan Birsa Munda. However, PM Modi declared Nov 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas to preserve this history," he added.
Scindia said PM Modi has appointed indigenous leaders to significant positions, including ministers and governors.
"For the first time in the history of India, a President from the indigenous community was elected. When the name of Draupadi Murmu as President of India was announced, Congress protested to show disrespect to the indigenous community," he pointed out.
He mentioned that a Prime Minister visited Bhagwan Birsa Munda's birthplace for the first time and introduced new welfare schemes like Janman Yojana. "A budget of ₹34,000 crores was allocated for the indigenous community," he said.
He added that PM Modi has provided the indigenous community with Ayushman cards, water connections, and educational opportunities.
"It is my good fortune that PM Modi has entrusted me with the responsibility of looking after the northeast. I have a personal connection with the indigenous community," he said.
