RPF seizes brown sugar worth over Rs 1 lakh from Silchar-Secunderabad train, 2 passengers held

Silchar: Railway Protection Force (RPF) of NF Railway has seized brown sugar worth over Rs 1 lakh from two passengers travelling on the 12514 Silchar–Secunderabad Weekly Superfast Express at . The passengers were arrested.

The Badarpur-Lumding hill line has increasingly become a safe corridor for drug smugglers, prompting RPF to intensify its crackdown.

Acting on a tip-off, the RPF launched a special operation and intercepted the train upon its arrival at New Haflong around 11:10 pm. During a thorough inspection of coach M-2, officers found two passengers — seated on berths 39 and 40 — carrying suspicious backpacks. On searching the bags, officials discovered 134.94g of brown sugar neatly packed inside ten soap boxes in an attempt to evade detection.

The two accused, identified as Moslem Ali (48) and Abu Imran Ahmed (27), both residents of Fakirgram in Dhubri district, were immediately arrested by the RPF personnel.

The contraband and the accused were brought down to Platform No. 1 of New Haflong station for further interrogation.

RPF sources said the hill section between Badarpur and Lumding has become a key transit route for narcotics smuggling, with frequent seizures of ganja, liquor, and now brown sugar. The force has vowed to continue its intensive surveillance and operations to curb the growing menace along the strategic rail corridor.
