Dibrugarh: Indian Railways has successfully completed electrification works on the Tinsukia–Dibrugarh and Makum–Ledo rail sections, marking a significant milestone in strengthening rail infrastructure in upper Assam.
The move is expected to usher in cleaner, faster and more energy-efficient train operations across the strategically important region.
With the completion of electrification, these sections are now ready for seamless operation of electric locomotives, reducing dependence on diesel engines and transforming the transportation landscape of eastern Assam. The development represents a major step toward modernising railway operations in the northeast, while addressing environmental concerns.
Parag Katre, divisional railway manager (DRM) of Tinsukia division, announced the achievement on Thursday, emphasising its far-reaching benefits.
“The electrification of these crucial sections will not only cut fuel costs and carbon emissions but also drastically improve operational reliability. Electric traction allows for smoother acceleration and higher average speeds, which will directly translate into better punctuality for our passengers and more efficient turnaround times for freight,” he said.
The Tinsukia–Dibrugarh section serves as a vital passenger and freight corridor, connecting major urban and commercial hubs of eastern Assam. This route handles substantial daily traffic, making its electrification particularly significant for the region’s economic activity and connectivity. Meanwhile, the Makum–Ledo line holds both historical and strategic importance, supporting coal movement from the coalfields and providing essential connectivity to remote areas near the Indo-Myanmar border.
Katre added that trial runs of electric locomotives on the newly electrified routes have been successful, paving the way for full-scale commercial operations in the near future. These trials have tested various operational parameters, including load capacity, speed optimisation and system integration, all yielding positive results.
“The electrification aligns with Indian Railways’ broader vision of achieving 100 percent electrification and becoming a net-zero carbon emitter in the coming years,” he said.
The electrification project involved extensive infrastructure development, including installation of overhead equipment, upgrades to power supply systems and modifications to existing railway facilities. The work was completed despite challenges posed by the region's climate and topography.
The completion of these works is also expected to benefit local industries, tea gardens and businesses by enabling faster and more reliable freight movement. The region's tea industry, a major economic driver, stands to gain considerably from improved logistics efficiency. Additionally, passengers are likely to experience improved punctuality and the potential introduction of new and upgraded services as electric operations expand.
