President’s Colour is a special flag which is given to a military, paramilitary or police unit as a mark of recognition for its services. A replica of the flag presented to the unit can be worn as an insignia by all officers and ranks of the force on their uniform.

D Udaya Kumar, associate professor of department of design, IIT Guwahati, who had designed the Indian rupee symbol, designed the flag. The flag presented to Assam Police has a map of the state with its 36 districts, the Assam Police insignia and the one-horned rhino — the state animal.

Kumar told TOI, “A total of 36 stars have been used in the map of Assam used in the flag. The stars are used to denote the sacrifices of numerous police personnel from the inception of the force. The stars also represent the districts of the state. Moreover, a replica of a one-horned rhino, which is the pride of Assam as well as one of the strongest animals, has also been used in the flag to denote the strength of the force.”

Uttar Pradesh Police was the first state police force to receive the award from the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1952. Former president Dr Rajendra Prasad presented the award to Delhi Police in 1954. Maharashtra Police received the award in 1961 followed by Jammu & Kashmir Police in 2003,

Tamil Nadu Police

in 2009, Tripura Police in 2012 and Gujarat Police in 2019. Himachal Pradesh Police received the award last year and Haryana Police received it in January this year.
