Assam: ‘Power outage to be inevitable, don’t panic’

GUWAHATI: After an Assam Power Distribution Company Limited in a public notice warned the people of the state of “inevitable” outages during the Pujas, a tweet by the APDCL on Monday evening asked consumers not to panic.
The APDCL) which supplies electricity to all consumers in the state, said in the notice that power generation at thermal plants has “decreased considerably” which may lead to “inevitable” outages and load-shedding in the state amid concerns over coal shortage in power plants across the country.
In a public notice, APDCL said, “Due to limited coal availability, the generation of power from Thermal Generating Stations has decreased considerably. The power position is clearly at a critical level and power outages/load shedding may be inevitable. Kindly & bear with us and use electricity judiciously. Energy saved is Energy generated.”
However, APDCL on Monday evening, while tagging the Assam CMO and state power minister Bimal Bora, in a tweet said, “Sufficient power is available. APDCL is committed to provide uninterrupted supply of power to our esteemed consumers. Consumers need not to panic.”
APDCL managing director Rakesh Kumar told TOI that the electricity demand has “increased in Assam due to the festival” and supply has been also hit to some extent but claimed it is not “linked to the nationwide coal crisis”.
