Guwahati: Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu has attributed the unexpected 12% decline in Assam Class 10 state board examination results to the poor performance of Schedule Caste (SC) students and children from tea tribes and some select districts.
Scheduled Castes (58.56%) and tea tribes (51.89%) remained below the state average of 63.98% in HSLC 2025 overall pass percentage, one of the lowest in the past decade. The pass percentage has plummeted from 75.7% in 2024 to 63.98% this year, lowest since 2022, as the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) announced the Class 10 boards results on Friday morning. Notably, boys have performed substantially better with 67.59 pass percentage, compared to girls' 61.09%.
"This year we witnessed a reverse trend in pass percentage. While certain districts contributed to this decline in results, caste and community-wise, the performance of students from tea tribes inhabited areas and SC students have been below the average," Pegu informed media persons here, on Friday.
The minister acknowledged the educational challenges in tea garden areas and highlighted various initiatives, including establishment of tea garden schools. For SC inhabited areas, he assured measures to boost educational development.
Pegu, scrutinising the results, indicated that general category students from the minority community have also influenced the decrease in pass percentage. This was evident in the underwhelming performance of districts like Goalpara, Dhubri, Cachar and Sribhumi, he noted.
"We shall prioritise districts where the pass percentage has been below average," he added.
Addressing the lower pass percentage of girls, Pegu emphasised the necessity to encourage them. "We need to incentivise girls' education," Pegu stated, endorsing state govt schemes for girls, including financial assistance and scooters.
Approximately 4.22 lakh candidates appeared in the exam, of whom 89,041 passed with first division, 1,35,568 with second division and 45,862 obtained third division.
