Guwahati: A pharmacy owner was on Monday arrested for throwing acid on a 35-year-old woman following an argument at Dhekiajuli in Assam’s Tezpur city on Monday, police said.
“The accused, identified as Bachhu Kar, has been booked under charges of wrongful confinement and voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid under the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” Dhekiajuli OC Raja
Sarkar said.
The incident took place near the Sapai Bagan area.
According to reports, the accused and the victim were acquaintances. The family members of the victim denied any love affair between them.
“According to witnesses, the accused had an argument with the woman and he suddenly took out the bottle of acid and threw it towards her,” Sarkar said. He added that the woman was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital and the accused will be produced before a court here on Tuesday.
Jitu Bora, the assistant manager of Gate Hospital, Tezpur, where the victim was admitted, said, “She was brought here with 15% burn injuries in her right neck and left hand. A team of three doctors is looking after her. She is undergoing treatment, but is out of danger.”
Police said the reasons behind the attack are yet to be ascertained.
“We will seek the custody of the accused for interrogation,” the OC said, adding “the sticker of the bottle, which we have recovered from the accused’s possession, says it is nitric acid.”
Last year, a 32-year-old woman was seriously injured in an acid attack by a 50-year-old man, identified as Buddhadev Das alias Oppel, after the victim allegedly rejected his marriage proposal.
The incident took place in Assam’s Dibrugarh district.
