Panchayat head shot at, two arrested

SILCHAR: President of Gabindaganj gaon panchayat in Karimganj district escaped unhurt when a group of criminals entered his house and shot at him early on Sunday morning. His wife was injured when the criminals beat her up.
A senior police officer said, "A group of 15 criminals, some of whom were carrying country-made guns, barged into the house of Akhil Das at Beergram around 1 am.The miscreants broke the door and entered the house."
The officer said the miscreants fired at least four rounds at him but Akhil Das managed to escape, after which the criminals turned to his wife Kabita Rani and beat her up mercilessly, in which she was critically injured.
Quoting an FIR filed by the family members, the police officer said the miscreants decamped with Rs 40,000 and gold ornaments from the house. Ratabari police have launched an operation to nab the miscreants. They recovered four empty cases of bullet from the house.
Two elected members of Gabindaganj gaon panchayat have been arrested.
"Operation is on to nab the other miscreants, some of whom are also members of the gram panchayat," the police officer said.
