Aizawl: Mizoram recorded its highest-ever annual tourist footfall last year, with over 8.41 lakh visitors, state tourism department director R Lalrodingi said on Wednesday.
Of the total, 8,29,839 were domestic tourists while 11,484 came from abroad. Domestic tourist visits rose by 96.69%, while foreign tourist visits surged by 112.11% in 2025 compared to 2024.
Tourist arrivals spiked after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new railroad link to Sairang, on the western outskirts of Aizawl, in mid-Sept. Footfall jumped to 95,885 in Sept 2025, compared to 30,507 in Sept 2024.
The number of visitors increased to 96,224 (94,866 domestic tourists and 1,358 foreign) during Oct last year as against 38,043 during the same month in 2024. The number further increased to 98,059 tourists during Nov 2025 as against 52,260 in Nov 2024, while the tourist footfall reached 1,33,520 during Dec last year, as against 60,112 during the same month in 2024.
Officials said foreign tourist arrivals began rising from June 2025, driven largely by visitors from Myanmar entering south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district for business purposes. Data was collected from accommodation units in Lawngtlai town, the district headquarters.
A large number of tourists, both domestic and foreign, also joined locals in Christmas and New Year celebrations, attending church services and participating in community feasts across the state.
