NE celebrates men in blue’s win after nearly 2 decades
Reverberations of the celebrations were seen as far as Shillong where the main passion of the locals is football. Several residents of the Scotland of East were seen bursting firecrackers, marching in the streets waving the Tricolour and chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ with enthusiasm. Other parts of the northeast also celebrated India’s win.
India’s win at the T20 WC finals, which came after a long gap of more than a decade, made the cricket-frenzy nation go wild in celebrations. Guwahati residents also unleashed unprecedented celebrations across the city, bursting firecrackers and waving the Tricolour. People from different age groups, including children, gathered in multitude at Ganeshguri, Chandmari, GS Road and other parts right after Hardik Pandya bowled the last ball of the T20 World Cup in the match against South Africa.
The fans sang and danced their hearts out while playing drums. Main thoroughfares of the city were filled with vehicles and police deployed their personnel at several places to maintain law and order and facilitate smooth vehicular movement.
Talking to TOI at Ganeshguri, an excited cricket fan said, “We all have been waiting for long for this victory. It has been more than a decade since we were crowned the champion’s title. Thanks to the Men-in-Blue for giving us this unforgettable night.”
Another fan added, “For some time, it felt like the Cup slipped from us, but Surya Kumar Yadav’s stunning catch showing Miller the way to the pavilion boosted the team morale and will surely be marked as the turning of the high-voltage match.”
